How 4 Stories Works

  1. Choose a question card: One learner asks a story based question while the other shares an experience.
  2. Listen and take notes: The interviewer writes short notes on the blank note cards. The goal is not to write every word. The goal is to capture meaningful details.
  3. Use prompts for more detail: Prompt cards help the interviewer ask follow up questions and encourage deeper storytelling.
  4. Switch roles: Learners change roles so each person has a chance to interview and be interviewed.
  5. Identify themes: Learners review their notes and look for repeated ideas, feelings, experiences, or challenges.
  6. Build a big idea: The group develops a larger insight based on the themes they found.

What learners practice

 4 Stories helps learners:

  • Conduct short qualitative interviews
  • Ask open ended questions
  • Listen carefully and take meaningful notes
  • Treat stories as data
  • Identify themes across multiple responses
  • Use evidence to support interpretations
  • Develop larger insights from human experiences
  • Practice communication, reflection, and perspective taking

Why this is STEM

Science is not only about numbers. Researchers also use interviews, observations, and stories to understand how people experience the world, ideate on problems, and find new solutions beyond small improvements to the current model.

4 Stories introduces learners to qualitative inquiry, a research method used in education, sociology, public health, design, technology, workforce development, and community research.

The central idea is simple:

Stories are data.
